This past Sunday, I attended the Governors Ball Music Festival; it was a blast. It was the perfect combination of food, friends, music, and … mud? Yes, mud. Unfortunately due to the insane amounts of rain on Friday evening, Randalls Island was super messy and very muddy. By Sunday, the mud was still plentiful and still very much there. Many people were in rain boots, since the mud was ankle-deep. However, putting the wet mud and nasty stench aside, the festival was awesome!
I got to the festival around 1:30 on Sunday afternoon, just in time to see the Vaccines. They were incredible. Post-Vaccines, my two friends and I traveled around the grounds and sought out the port-o-potties and food areas. There was plenty of good food, including trucks from Bare Burger and other NYC joints. After finding food- the best grilled cheese ever- we went back to the Honda Stage to see the Cold War Kids. They sounded amazing live and were perfect in every possible way. Then we were off to an afternoon of non-stop music from 4pm on. The Lumineers were cute, quirky, and adorable. Everyone was humming, swaying, and tapping along to their folk songs which added a bit of cuteness to an otherwise indie-rock/rap festival. Next up were The XX; They took the stage just as twilight fell over NYC. Their performance was a fantastic combination of lights, beats, and soft melodies. And then, it was… Mr. Kanye West. The night ended with Kanye West closing out the festival. Of course he arrived 25 minutes late, but would you expect anything else? His almost 2 hour performance was a really great mixture of old and new music.
Overall, the festival was really great! It had a little bit of everything for everybody. Yes, the mud was gross, but most people were able to look past that and have a great time regardless.
Also, if you are wondering what I used to take all the pictures above, stay tuned!
